RICHMOND IRISH DANCERS:
As we approach St. Patrick’s Day, an update about the Irish Dancers is due. The dancers performed in their usual Christmas concert at Richmond Regional High School to a full auditorium and showed off our new dresses. The bake sale went off as a hit once again. Thanks to all who came to watch and encourage the dancers. On the 12th of March we will be dancing at the St. Pat’s Banquet. What a great opportunity to see those new dresses! We will participate in the parade on March 20th and later in the month we will be dancing for wonderful people at the Wales Home.  As spring comes to warm us, the dancers will be getting ready for the Annual Feis in Montreal in May.  Our spring show will be held at RRHS on May 29th. Hope to see you all there

Joe Kelly has been busy with the collection of returnable cans and bottles for various worthy causes such as the Terry Fox Foundation, the Wales Home Foundation, and now for the Adaptive Sports Foundation (formerly The Eastern Townships Disabled Skiers Foundation).  As Joe says, he is fortunate to be able to help others and appreciates the local support that makes it possible to raise funds for these causes.  Please call Joe at 819-826-3929 to arrange pick-up of empties, or drop them off at 8 Melbourne Ave N., Richmond.  Thanks to Corey Morin, Joe is also selling Domino Pizza cards for the causes.

Last fall’s Boscobel tours given by Rodney and Muriel Duffy were a roaring success, to the point of being over sold! As a matter of fact, there has been a recent burial at the local cemetery.  Looks like people are dying to get in to Boscobel!

Maureen Quinn, while swimming in Hawaii, got knocked over by a huge wave. She was saved by a tall white-haired gentleman who later took her to supper. Her son Mike from Calgary found time to chase those grass skirts!

IN OUR THOUGHTS:
Gary Quinn, formerly from Richmond, St. Pat’s Banquet 2008 guest speaker

Oswald Enright, brother to Mrs. Agnes Keenan

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
We are very pleased to share with you information about Peter Treacy from Knowlton, QC.  Peter is married to Joan Flood Treacy; both are formerly from Montreal.  Peter’s father, Peter Paul Treacy, immigrated to Canada from Garrison, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland in 1929 and Joan’s grandfather, Thomas Flood emigrated from County Cork.  They have 3 children with good Irish names: Michael of Oakville, Brian of Ottawa, and Sean of LaSalle, QC, and 6 grandchildren.  How Irish can you be!
Peter and Joan joined our St. Pat’s Society about 10 years ago, just before he retired from IBM in Bromont.  Anne O’Donnell invited him to a St. Pat’s Banquet and he was an easy sell for a membership!  Later on, he became our first paid-up 5 year member.
In December 1980, when Peter was in his car which had caught fire, Joan pulled him from the vehicle. He ended up with third degree burns on 60% of his body and his right leg was amputated below the knee.  Five years later, Peter saw a one-legged skier coming down a hill!  These events were what kick-started his plans to work with disabled people, to improve their everyday lives.
Peter created the Eastern Townships Disabled Skiers Foundation, starting with five skiers and 10 instructors. Sixteen years later, it has grown to 100 certified volunteer instructors to teach the 84 disabled skiers who come to Owl's Head each year.  The organization now includes waterskiing, sailing, kayaking and archery.  More than 300 kids participate each summer. The name has changed to the Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) which is a registered, non-profit, charitable organization. The mission of the ASF is to establish, operate and maintain educational programs that encourage physically disabled children and adults to discover new abilities through alpine skiing and summer sports. The trained volunteers assist these individuals to become as independent as possible in their chosen sport.
Peter's group now includes Armed Forces soldiers from Valcartier who have returned from Afghanistan. Some soldiers have injuries such as missing limbs, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and grief of loss of comrades. This is the “Soldier On” program that promotes adaptive sports to help them integrate into society, feel good about themselves, and improve their quality of life. It supports these people in increasing their independence, in developing new skills and in achieving goals.
On January 24th  2011, David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston, on a one-day visit to the Eastern Townships, travelled to Owl’s Head where they were welcomed by Peter Treacy. The two guests had the opportunity to learn more about the equipment used and see demonstrations conducted by Soldier On participants and ASF students.
A mother of one of Peter’s students remarked, “You changed the lives of so many people. It was a good thing, what happened to you“!   Peter, Joan and their team of volunteers are to be congratulated for their tremendous work to improve the lives of their participants.   For more information, please visit www.adaptivesports.ca and www.SoldierOn.ca.

IRISH HUMOUR:
An English politician who was speaking at the Richmond Legion hall, shouted:” I was born an Englishman, I have lived all my life as an Englishman, and I hope to die as an Englishman!” Mickey Blemings shouted from the back, “Have you no ambition at all?”

Keenan said to Murphy” Why does Hill smile when he was struck by lighting?”
Murphy answered,” He thinks he is having his picture taken again!”

Some of you may have heard Joe Kelly tell about his “Granny Kelly’s words of wisdom”. He is sharing a few of these with us:
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night!
If your enemy wrongs you, buy each of his children a drum!
Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving!

THANK YOU:
To all who contributed to the newsletter, with articles, translations, envelopes, typing and editing, Paddy says, “Thank you!”  Comments, articles, and information are always welcome.
